Department of Mental Health Law and Policy now home to international center for addiction studies

USF's Department of Mental Health Law and Policy (MHLP) is now home to an international center for addiction studies, the Universal Treatment Curriculum (UTC) Coordinating Center for North American Universities.  For this project, USF is partnering with the Colombo Plan in Sri Lanka, the U.S. Department of State, and the International Consortium of Universities for Drug Demand Reduction (ICUDDR).  Dr. Roger Peters, Professor and Fulbright Scholar, serves as Director for the UTC Coordinating Center, and Cary Hopkins Eyles, MA, CAP recently joined MHLP to serve as Assistant Director.  The Center will disseminate the UTC curriculum to universities throughout North America for use in developingundergraduate and graduate programs in addiction studies.  The Center will also collaborate with a network of universities that are interested in implementing academic programs in addiction studies, and will work with the Colombo Plan and other international partners to help evaluate the effectiveness of the UTC curriculum and to develop a mentorship structure to augment current UTC training approaches.  

The work of the UTC Coordinating Center was featured at the 2nd Annual Conference of the International Consortium for Drug Demand Reduction (ICUDDR) in Prague, Czech Republic on June 19-21, where Dr. Peters served as conference co-chair.  The ICUDDR conference included participants from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction, the U.S. Department of State, the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission/Organization of American States, the International Society of Substance Use Professionals, and university representatives from Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and North and South America.   

Dr. Roger Peters, Director of the UTC Coordinating Center for North American Universities, provided several presentations at the ICUDDR conference in Prague, Czech Republic, held on June 19-21, 2017.
