SW Instructor Named Educator of the Year

Congratulations to Chris Simmons, PhD, LCSW, for receiving the National Association of Social Workers Tampa Bay Unit Educator of the Year Award. Dr. Simmons teaches in both the undergraduate and graduate programs. This award is given to "someone who makes a significant contribution to social work education; demonstrates outstanding leadership; and contributes to a positive image for the social work profession." Dr. Simmons truly embodies these qualities as evidenced by the following statement reported by a student, "Dr. Simmons has demonstrated a rare quality that only the greatest of academics possess wherein not only does he effectively convey the thoughts and concepts of the material, but truly inspires and excites students to do and be more." Dr. Simmons also serves as the Faculty Supervisor for the BRIDGE (Building Relationships and Initiatives Dedicated to Gaining Equality) Clinic at USF. BRIDGE is a student-run clinic that provides free healthcare services to under-served and uninsured community members through interdisciplinary collaboration with social work, medicine, pharmacy, physical therapy and public health. As one student remarked, "It's not just that Dr. Simmons has made me a better social worker, it's that without him, I might not be one at all."
