8/19/2017 * 8:30-3:30
Randy Otto, Ph.D., ABPP and Chris Slobogin, J.D., LL.M.
This 3-day workshop is designed for psychologists and psychiatrists who evaluate criminal defendants in Florida courts. The focus of the program is evaluation of defendants' 1) competence to proceed (stand trial) and 2) mental state at the time of the alleged offense (sanity). Other types of criminal forensic evaluations are not addressed. Relevant rules of evidence, the role of examining mental health professionals, ethical obligations, and strategies for report writing and testimony are discussed. For both competence to proceed and mental state at the time of the alleged offense, Constitutional and Florida law and procedure shaping the inquiries is reviewed, followed by a discussion of evaluation approaches. Although professionals other than psychologists and psychiatrists may find this program of interest, potential participants are cautioned that Florida Statutes Chapter 916 directs that, whenever possible, psychiatrists and psychologists conduct competence to proceed and sanity evaluations via court order.  To register click here: https://www.eventbrite.com/myevent?eid=33310674123.
