Dr. Kathy Hyer Receives R01 Grant from the National Institutes of Health

Dr. Kathy Hyer just received an R01 grant from the National Institutes of Health to study health outcomes of strategic approaches to disaster threats among vulnerable elderly in long-term care facilities. State-wide data from Florida and Texas will be used to conduct a thorough investigation of the health outcomes in the months after hurricanes Irma and Harvey associated with sheltering versus evacuation. Older adults are especially vulnerable to harm during disasters because of their medical comorbidities, such as dementia, and functional impairments. Prior work by Dr. Hyer and her team using data from the Gulf hurricanes from 2005-08 showed significant differences in morbidity and mortality outcomes in the months following the storms as a function of sheltering in place vs. evacuation. This project will fill the need for additional evidence to inform policies created to protect vulnerable NH residents in disasters, and extend this to assisted living communities.
