MHLP Professor Receives UNI Grant

Dr. Roger Peters was recently awarded a USF Nexus Initiative (UNI) grant to conduct research with colleagues from the Universidad Catolica in Asuncion, Paraguay. The project is entitled: "Examining Treatment Needs and Alternatives to Incarceration among Substance-Involved Women in the Justice System". The UNI grant project will provide cross-cultural research in South America and the U.S. to investigate the need for substance abuse services among incarcerated women, and to identify strategies for diverting these women to community-based treatment programs that serve as alternatives to incarceration. Key project activities include comparative analysis of the prevalence of substance use disorders among female prisoners in Paraguay and the U.S., technical assistance to correctional authorities to improve screening procedures and to identify strategies for diverting female prisoners to community treatment, and research colloquia at USF and the Universidad Católica in Asuncion, Paraguay. The UNI award will support ongoing collaboration with partners from Dr. Peters' Fulbright Specialist project in Paraguay that was completed in 2017.
