Community Health Workers in Chiapas, Mexico Now Treat Depression

From June 3-8, Dr. Galea (School of Social Work) co-lead a training that taught community health workers living in coffee plantations in the State of Chiapas, Mexico how to deliver the depression intervention "Problem Management Plus" (PM+). PM+ is an evidence based, low intensity psychological intervention disseminated by the World Health Organization which was designed to be delivered by people with no formal education in mental health. Dr. Galea has also implemented PM+ in Lima, Peru and is planning to pilot the intervention at the USF Bridge clinic with colleagues from the School of Social Work. Depression is a primary cause of disease burden worldwide with an estimated 322 million people living with the disorder.
