MHLP Professor Receives Fulbright Scholarship

Roger Peters, PhD, has been awarded a Fulbright Specialist Grant in Public/Global Health to be conducted in Cape Coast, Ghana with colleagues from the University of Cape Coast. The Fulbright Grant will support four weeks of on-site work in June 2015, to include the following activities:

  • Develop substance use screening and assessment instruments for use in Ghana's three psychiatric hospitals, and conduct a needs assessment/survey to identify the level of substance use disorders among Ghana's psychiatric hospital population;
  • Train mental health professionals within the psychiatric hospitals in specialized approaches for implementing integrated mental health and substance abuse treatment services;
  • Consult with mental health professionals and administrators at the high security prison in Cape Coast regarding methods to identify persons who have mental and substance use disorders, and to develop treatment models for this population;
  • Provide seminars, workshops, and lectures at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) related to co-occurring mental and substance use disorders, and effective screening, assessment, and rehabilitative approaches for behavioral health disorders;
  • Design a curriculum sequence and course syllabi related to mental health and substance abuse issues within the College of Health and Allied Sciences at UCC;
  • Identify eligible faculty members to participate in USF's Ghana Scholars Program;
  • Develop plans to offer one or more interdisciplinary classes in Ghana related to mental health and substance abuse issues, through USF's Study Abroad program.
