Aging Studies Graduate Student Wins Research Award

Maya Elias won the Master's Student Research Award from the Chicago based Retirement Research Foundation for her project entitled "Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Glycemic Control among U.S. Middle Aged and Older Adults with Diabetes". The Master's Student Research Award recognizes outstanding students for exceptional research projects completed in the areas of gerontology, aging, chronic illness and disability in adults, long-term care, or geriatrics during their training as a student. Maya earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Central Florida, with minors in Aging Studies and Health Sciences. She is currently pursuing a graduate degree in Gerontology while simultaneously pursuing graduate certificates in Applied Biostatistics and Clinical Investigation. She currently works as a Registered Nurse at Tampa General Hospital, where she provides direct nursing care for patients with complex neurological conditions, including stroke, traumatic brain injuries and spinal cord injuries.
