Associate Professor in Department of Communication & Sciences Disorders receives USF Faculty International Travel Grant


Jennifer Lister, Associate Professor and Audiology Graduate Program Director in the Department of Communication & Sciences Disorders (CSD) at USF’s College of Behavioral & Community Sciences, recently received a Faculty International Travel Grant Internal Award from USF’s Faculty Senate Research Council.


Lister used her award to attend the International Conference on Adult Hearing Screening, held June 10-12, 2010 in Cernobbio, Italy.  The conference, which is the only  international meeting dedicated to the assessment of hearing older adults, was sponsored by AHEAD III (Assessment of Hearing in the Elderly: Aging and Degeneration - Integration through Immediate Intervention). 


At the conference, Lister presented on her development of a clinical tool for the measurement of auditory temporal (timing) processing among older adults. Of the four abstracts submitted for the conference, three had the honor of being selected by the convention committee for oral presentation (podium). The presentations represented an extraordinary opportunity to showcase CSD’s strength in hearing an aging through the work of PhD students at two levels, a former PhD student who is now a research assistant professor, and an associate professor from the department. Lister received her PhD in Communication Sciences & Disorders in 1999 and BS in Speech & Hearing Sciences in 1995, both from the University of South Alabama. Her primary area of research is hearing and aging...specifically, the slowing that occurs in the auditory system with age and how to assess and rehabilitate this slowing. She joined the CSD faculty at USF in 1999.


USF’s Internal Awards process is designed to provide support to faculty not only in the form of financial awards, but also in the form of constructive feedback designed to help strengthen future grant proposals and related scholarship. The feedback comes from written reviews and panel summaries, which are also used by the USF Faculty Senate Research Council in determining the distribution of the program’s funds. This approach is similar to peer-reviewed processes used by federal funding agencies and has been adopted at USF to enhance the value of the Internal Awards competitions for all participants.
